CUSTOM WINE CELLARS

Custom Wine Cellars in Detroit

From a landmark downtown cellar to the one in your home.

Detroit rewards rooms built properly. The loft conversions of the greater downtown, the grand old houses of Indian Village and Boston-Edison, the early pockets of Corktown, and the quiet streets of Palmer Woods all hold collections worth protecting. We design and build custom wine cellars across Detroit and metro Detroit, and we have done it at the highest-pressure level there is: a landmark downtown restaurant. That discipline is exactly what we bring to your home.

A formal tasting room enclosed by floor-to-ceiling glass wine walls framed in warm gold-toned metal, backlit so the wine bottles read as the texture of the walls. A gold leaf ceiling with a sculptural crystal chandelier hangs over a long dark tasting table with black leather chairs and gold-framed glassware, on a polished black and white striped stone floor.

A Detroit project

A Detroit project: wine storage where failure is not an option

Before it was ever in a home, this discipline was proven downtown.

A completed Detroit project

We built the wine cellar for Prime + Proper, the modern American steakhouse at 1145 Griswold Street in Capitol Park, downtown Detroit. The restaurant holds a Wine Spectator Best of Award of Excellence for its wine program. A restaurant cellar is the hardest version of the brief: constant service, deep bottle counts, and no margin for temperature drift, night after night. That real commercial work is proof of the same discipline we bring to your home collection.

The finished room has glass wine walls on both sides, with backlit bottles reading as the texture of the walls. A gold leaf ceiling, long crystal chandelier, and polished tasting table complete the jewel box of warm gold, black, glass, and wine.

Why that matters for your home is simple. If the room can hold its line through a full Friday service at a steakhouse known for its wine, it can hold your collection through a Michigan winter.

Why Detroit

Why Detroit homes take a cellar beautifully

A city of substantial buildings, a state of serious wine, and a climate that asks for both to be stored well.

The architecture comes first. Downtown and the districts around it, Capitol Park, Midtown, and Brush Park, are full of historic buildings converted to lofts and residences with the kind of lower levels and service spaces that convert well to wine storage. Outward, the historic districts hold some of the finest housing stock in the Midwest: the mansions of Indian Village and Boston-Edison, the estates of Palmer Woods, and the brick streets of Corktown.

The suburbs extend it. Grosse Pointe, Birmingham, Bloomfield Hills, Rochester Hills, Northville, and Ann Arbor bring their own range of homes, from lakefront places to new builds, many with basements or lower levels that suit a cellar.

Michigan wine culture is the other half of the story. The Old Mission and Leelanau Peninsulas near Traverse City have put the state's wines on the map, and Detroit collectors take them seriously: Riesling and Pinot Noir from up north, Burgundy and Bordeaux laid down for the long term. Wine this considered deserves storage that matches.

And the climate asks for it. Michigan winters are long and hard on a room that holds a steady temperature, and summers bring humid days off the lakes. A cellar here needs insulation and vapor sealing planned for that swing, and a cooling unit sized for real summer load.

Why custom beats off the shelf

A wine fridge holds bottles. A cellar holds a collection.

Wine is quietly sensitive. Temperatures that drift, air that dries out, light that lingers, and vibration from everyday life all find their way into the glass. A purpose-built wine storage room removes those risks at the source and in Michigan it also has to hold steady through dry winter air and humid summers without working harder than it should.

Stable temperature and humidity: so flavor and aroma mature exactly as they should, through Michigan winters and lake-humid summers.

Protection from light and vibration: so delicate wines age gracefully.

Room to grow: because the collection you start is rarely the one you keep.

The result is simple: every bottle, from the everyday pour to the once in a lifetime vintage, gets the same careful conditions.

What we design

Every home, and every collection, asks for something a little different.

We design residential wine cellars in a range of forms:

Dedicated cellar rooms: a true destination for serious collecting and quiet browsing, often carved from a lower level or service space in a downtown conversion.

Glass-enclosed display cellars: your collection as part of the room, protected behind glass.

Wine walls: racking that turns storage into architecture, a strong fit for a downtown loft or a wide expanse of historic wall.

Tasting rooms: a place to open, pour, and stay a while.

Furniture-grade enclosures: full cellar performance in a smaller footprint.

Whether your wine cellar leans minimal glass and metal or warm wood and stone, the room should feel like it belongs to your home.

Climate and preservation, handled quietly

Climate and preservation, handled quietly

This is the part you should never have to think about once it is built.

We size and specify wine cellar cooling units for your room, balance humidity so corks stay sealed and healthy through Michigan winters, insulate and vapor-seal the space so the system is not fighting the house, and add monitoring so you always know your wine is resting easy.

Good climate design is invisible. You will notice it only in how well your wine keeps.

Design and materials

Design and materials

A cellar should be a pleasure to look at, and to open.

Glass: frameless, low-iron panels that keep the view and the climate.

Metal racking: sleek, label-forward display for modern spaces.

Walnut and pale oak millwork: warm, furniture-grade joinery built to last.

Integrated lighting: gentle, low-heat light that shows off labels without harming the wine.

Stone and metal accents: texture and contrast, chosen for the room.

Inside the racking, we plan for how you actually collect: X-bins for cases, shelving for magnums, drawers for odds and ends, stemware racks, and a tasting table if you have the room for one.

Who it is for

Who it is for

Two kinds of people find their way to us, and both are welcome.

Experienced collectors come to us for precise climate control, thoughtful racking, and a cellar worthy of what they have spent years gathering.

People just beginning a collection come to us with a handful of bottles and a feeling that they want to do this properly. That is more than enough to start. A good cellar grows with you.

Restaurants, clubs, hotels, and tasting rooms

Detroit is also where our commercial work lives, and few builders can say that.

A commercial wine cellar is the most demanding version of the craft: deep bottle counts, nightly service, tall back-bar walls, and a climate system that cannot take a night off. We design and build for restaurants, private clubs, hotels, and tasting rooms, alongside the private collections that fill the rest of our calendar.

If you are opening a dining room, a club, or a tasting space anywhere in metro Detroit, bring us the brief early. The earlier we are in the plan, the better the room turns out.

04

Installation. We install, calibrate, test, and walk you through the finished room.

05

Aftercare. We stay available for service, adjustments, and advice as your collection or ritual grows.

Questions, answered

Questions, answered

Do you work in Detroit?

Yes. We design and build custom wine cellars across Detroit and metro Detroit, from the greater downtown districts to Grosse Pointe, Birmingham, Bloomfield Hills, Rochester Hills, Northville, and Ann Arbor, from our base in Knapp, Wisconsin.

Have you completed a project in Detroit?

Yes. We built the wine cellar for Prime + Proper, the modern American steakhouse at 1145 Griswold Street in Capitol Park, downtown Detroit. It remains a reference point for how we approach every cellar.

Do you build for restaurants and commercial spaces?

Yes. Restaurants, private clubs, hotels, and tasting rooms are a core part of our work, and the Capitol Park project above is the clearest example. The demands of commercial service shape how we build every cellar, including in homes.

Can you work in older or historic buildings?

Often, yes. Detroit's historic districts and downtown conversions come with real constraints: access, ceiling heights, moisture, and structures that have settled. We assess the building first, then design the room around what is actually there.

How long does a project take?

Most projects run several weeks to a few months depending on scope and construction. We will map the timeline with you during design so there are no surprises.
